"Molecular Jet Printing for Organic Electronic

                                   and Optoelectronic Device Applications"

Jianglong Chen

Growing interest in organic electronic and optoelectronic devices is sustained by continuing demonstrations of striking display application based on organic light emitting devices (OLEDs) and the promise of organic field effect transistor (OFET) circuits for ubiquitous electronics.

We will introduce the first generation molecular jet (MoJet), a high resolution organic and metal thin film p attern ing technique , and its application in fabricating 8 00dpi OLED s with 30µm pixels and OFETs with 15µm wide channels. T he operating properties of MoJet printed OLED and OFET devices are shown to be comparable to the performance of those fabricated by conventional vacuum deposition through a metal stencil.  W e will then present the concept and the application of an improved (the second generation) MoJet p rinter . Using this new printer we show molecular organic semiconducting thin films can be directly p atterned by local evaporative deposition in a non-vacuum environment. The benefit of printing in ambient is very significant for achieving low-cost fabrication. The concept of MoJet “flux-on-demand” is enabled by the use of a MEMS printhead. The printhead's performance and characteristics will be discussed briefly, with an emphasis on analysis of the failure mode and new designs towards a more robust printhead.
