Photosynthesis Inspired Redesign
of Organic Photovoltaics
Jon
K. Mapel
I will present recent results and current prospects in our
research group
focused on increasing power conversion efficiencies in organic
solar cells.
Photosynthetic solar energy harvesting by plants and bacteria
provides an
example of an inexpensive, robust system of solar to electrical
energy
conversion. To this end, we have looked towards photosynthesis
for
materials and device architectures. The successful integration
of
photosynthetic protein complexes into a solid state device
demonstrates the
compatibility of biological components and organic semiconductors.
I will
discuss novel device designs in which electrical and optical
components are
decoupled, similar to the compartmentalization of components
present in
photosynthetic systems.
