Integrated
Optical Isolators
Tauhid Zaman
Integrated optical
isolators will be essential to the development of photonic
integrated circuits for future optical networks. Isolators
eliminate
back-reflections which cause noise in lasers and optical amplifiers
and are
currently only available in bulk form. Our research
has been focused on
implementing waveguide optical isolators in InP, thus allowing
for monolithic
integration with semiconductor lasers and optical amplifiers.
Our work showing
the viability of InP and InGaAsP for optical isolators will
be discussed.
Recent achievement of a zero-birefringence, high-index contrast
waveguide, an
essential component for waveguide isolators, will be presented.
A proposed
design for a polarization independent integrated isolator
which provides 24 dB
of isolation will be shown.
