The MIT-Harvard Center for Ultracold Atoms
invites
you to participate in

The TOPS Physics Workshop

July 21 through August 1, 2008

The TOPS Physics Workshop is a two-week program for high school students interested in science who are currently freshmen and sophomores. Participants will explore the physics of heat, energy, and light through hands-on activities and lessons taught by undergraduate physics students. They will also learn about research in the CUA and see how elementary principles of physics are manifested in frontier research. This program is offered free-ofcharge and will take place at the Center for Ultracold Atoms at MIT in Cambridge. The TOPS Physics Workshop is a program within the Teaching Opportunities in Physical Science (TOPS) program for undergraduate physics and engineering majors.

The Who, Where, When, and How of the TOPS '08 Physics Workshop

Who : Rising High School Sophomores and Juniors who are interested in science. Students should have taken a high school course in physical science, physics, or chemistry.

Where : The Center for Ultracold Atoms (CUA) at MIT, room 26-268. The Center for Ultracold Atoms is funded by the Division of Physics of the National Science Foundation. It has ten principal investigators at MIT and Harvard with research programs devoted to developing new techniques for creating ultracold atoms and for applying these atoms to goals such as, atom optics, atomic quantum fluids, and novel spectroscopy.

When : July 21 through August 1, 2008. Monday through Friday, 8:30am – 4pm daily.

Cost : Free!

How to Apply: Submit the completed application as soon as possible: there are only 24 available places. The application can be found at the bottom of this page.

Further Information

High school students are required to attend the entire 10 day-long program. All students must plan on being at MIT for the entire program each day from 8:30am until 4pm. Students are responsible for their own transportation to and from the MIT campus. The CUA is a short walk from the Kendall T Station on the MBTA Red Line.

About TOPS Teaching Opportunities in Physical Science (TOPS) is a summer program for undergraduate physics and engineering majors who are considering careers teaching middle school or high school. The goal of TOPS is to encourage these students to pursue teaching careers by providing an exceptional opportunity to learn about teaching by working with master teachers and young learners. Participants will create and then teach material at two levels: middle school and high school. Students will prepare and teach topics such as heat, energy and forces, or light—themes that are central to the research in the MIT-Harvard Center for Ultracold Atoms (CUA).

For more information, visit the TOPS website at http://www.rle.mit.edu/cua/tops.htm.

TOPS is sponsored by the MIT-Harvard Center for Ultracold Atoms (CUA). The CUA is supported by the National Science Foundation.
