At the conclusion of the MIT 100K Entrepreneurship Competition on May 15, 2013, the 3dim team comprising of RLE Principal Investigator Vivek K. Goyal, PhD students Ahmed Kirmani (EECS), Andrea Colaço (MIT Media Lab), and Nan-Wei Gong (MIT Media Lab), and Sloan MBA students Nate Stewart and Rahul Tejwani, was awarded the Robert P. Goldberg Grand Prize. The team, also winners of the MIT 100K Pitch Contest, offered a breakthrough in 3D gesture sensing technology. Unlike existing 3D sensing methods which require high power illumination, sophisticated sensors and complex processing, the 3dim solution, developed at the MIT Research Laboratory of Electronics by Kirmani and ColaÇo, exploits the compressibility of 3D signals to reduce power, cost and complexity of 3D acquisition. The novel signal processing software algorithms enable 3dim to be the first ever mobile 3D camera that can be integrated in the 2014 smartphone releases. The team was one of 8 finalists in the prestigious competition, and along with honors also took the top cash prize of $100,000.
In addition to their success at the MIT 100K Competition, 3dim is one of 8 MIT teams that will participate in the 2013 MIT Global Founders’ Skills Accelerator. The Martin Trust Center for MIT Entrepreneurship program provides participating student teams with guidance, workspace, and up to $20,000 in grants.
