We report a comprehensive study of photoluminescence (PL) quenching of tris-(8-hydroxyquinoline) aluminum (Alq3) at interfaces with thin films of tin oxide (SnO2) using both steady-state and time-resolved measurements. Quenching of excitons generated in the Alq3 layer increased with increased conductivity of the SnO2 films, which we relate with the presence of nonradiative energy transfer from excitons in Alq3 to transitions in SnO2. In addition, due to the semitransparency of SnO2, the effects of optical interference on the steady-state PL quenching of Alq3 are determined. We demonstrate that without accounting for the interference effects in the excitation, the extracted exciton diffusion length (Ld) in Alq3 is in the range of 10–20 nm. However, when using a numerical model to account for the optical interference effects, we find that Ld is in the range of 5–9 nm, which agrees with Ld extracted from time-resolved measurements (4–6 nm). We conclude that time-resolved measurements are least affected by optical interference, yielding the most accurate measurement of Ld.

We report the formation and photonic properties of CdSe/ZnS quantum dot (QD)/J-aggregate donor-acceptor Forster resonant energy transfer (FRET) pairs that are electrostatically bound and dispersed in water. Assembly occurs when the positively charged dye, 1,1',3,3'-tetraethyl-5,5',6,6'-tetrachlorobenzimidazolocarbocyanine (TTBC), binds electrostatically to QDs that are coated with a negatively charged amphiphilic polymer. QD/J-aggregate FRET pairs display the broadband absorption in the visible and the ultraviolet (UV) part of the spectrum typical of quantum dots, along with the narrow emission linewidths characteristic of J-band emitters (similar to 12 nm full width at half-maximum). We use dynamic light scattering, transmission electron microscopy, photoluminescence spectroscopy, and photoluminescence lifetimes to conclude that the size of the aggregates formed in the presence of QDs is between 1-6 nm. We find the FRET radius of the QD/J-aggregate to be 5.1 nm. We further demonstrate electrostatic binding as a general synthetic strategy for these types of FRET pairs by attaching a negatively charged J-aggregate (BIC) to a quantum dot coated with positively charged ligands.

We demonstrate a heterojunction photodetector of lateral geometry that utilizes an evaporated film of the hole-transporting molecular material N,N-'-bis(3-methylphenyl)-N,N-'-bis(phenyl)-9,9-spirobifluorene (spiro-TPD) as a charge transport layer and that is sensitized across visible wavelengths by a thin film of colloidal CdSe nanocrystal quantum dots (QDs). High photon-to-electron quantum conversion efficiencies are obtained at room temperature as a result of photoconductive gain. With an electric field of 3.0x10(5) V/cm applied across the electrodes, we measure the external quantum efficiency at the first QD absorption peak (at wavelength lambda=590 nm) to be 13%, corresponding to an internal quantum efficiency of approximately 80%. The operating mechanism of these devices is discussed, noting that the optical response is dominated by the QD absorption spectrum while the charge transport nearly exclusively takes place in the spiro-TPD.
