Center for Electromagnetic Theory and Applications

ABOUT THE GROUP
RLE's Center for Electromagnetic Theory and Applications (CETA) pursues a comprehensive range of research activity involving all forms of electromagnetic propagation. Particular focus is placed on issues related to remote sensing, including: SIR-C polarimetric radar imaging for various types of vegetation on the ground (e.g., forest, rice fields); effects of weather conditions on use of polarimetric thermal emissions for ocean surface imaging; electromagnetic scattering interaction between ships and rough ocean surfaces; study of methods for synthetic aperture radar (SAR) interferometry using a newly developed simulation model; use of inverse scattering models for accurate recognition of ground targets under foliage; and novel techniques for detection of buried objects, to be used for clearing postwar zones and military proving grounds of minefields and unexploded ordnance. Other topics include: electromagnetic behavior in complex media; the effects of radio frequency (RF) interference on airport instrument landing systems (ALS) for aircraft autolanding; electromagnetic interactions with nonspherical dense media; and electromagnetic propagation in three-dimensional periodic structures.
