ABOUT THE GROUP The RLE Quanta Research Group seeks to understand and create information technology and intelligence from the fundamental building blocks of physical media, atoms and molecules, focusing particularly on tools and technologies for quantum computation. Previous work focused on the development of an NMR quantum computer leading to the experimental demonstration of Shor's factoring algorithm. Current work focuses on implementing a scalable ion trap architecture. The group is approaching the challenge in three ways: (1) modelling ion trap quantum computers with realistic parameters to assess the fault-tolerance threshold and optimize the layout; (2) testing and constructing planar traps that can move ions through an arbitrary two dimensional layout; and (3)
building an atomic ion trap system capable of performing quantum operations in these planar traps.
Additionally, the group is interested in left handed materials, electron transport through break junctions and molecules, and composite pulse techniques for both quantum and classical control.
