2009

Joe Summers joins the POE lab in June as a Post-Doctoral Associate.

Eugen Zgraggen, a M.S. student at ETH, Zurich Switzerland. visited the POE group to advance his thesis research in carrier injection modulators in CMOS photonics in the spring and summer of 2009.  

Mariana Fernandes, a Ph.D candidate in the MIT|Portugal program in  the Bioengineering Focus Area,  also was a visiting student fir spring and summer of '09 researching the development of new wearable technologies to monitor brain activity, using electro-optic methods in NeuroEngineering.

2008

Kevin Lee was awarded the National Institute of Health (NIH) Training Grant.       

Mass Tech Transfer Center grant was awarded to support research spin-out of Harry Lee's bioreactor technology.

Alumnus Farhan Rana was awarded the DARPA 2008 Young Faculty Investigator Award.

6/2008

Joe Summers, a post-doc from Mt. Holyoke College, has joined the Physical Optics and Electronics Lab for the summer to work on 3D thermal imaging of optoelectonics. His area of research also includes photonic integrated circuits for optical communications.

3/2008

Alumnus Kevin Pipe and his team has received a Multidisciplinary University Research Initiative (MURI) award from the Air Force Office of Scientific Research. Kevin will direct the reseach on passive and active control of heat transfer at interfaces.

Kevin Lee was awarded the Widmer Poster Prize at the microTAS 2007 Conference in Paris held 7th - 11th October 2007


5/2007
Reja Amatya, Jason Orcutt, Kevin Lee, and Tauhid Zaman presented papers at CLEO'07 in Baltimore, Maryland in May.

Tom Liptay successfully defended his thesis on April 9th titled, "Spectral Properties of Semiconductor Nanocrystals and their Applications"

3/2007

Peter Mayer will be defending his thesis: "High-power thermoelectric power generation and nanoscale thermal metrology."

1/2007

Elizabeth Bruce has rejoined MIT to work on technologies for streaming biopharmaceuticalmanufacturing with the Center for Biomedical Innovation (CBI).

4/2006

The group has returned from its West Coast Tour in April. The group visited the labs of Steven Quake, Stephen Block, Jelena Vukovic at Stanford, Arun Majumdar, Ming Wu, and Luke Lee at UC Berkeley as well as JDSU' s planar waveguide fabrication facility in Milpitas. The visit was topped off by a party with Alums Erwin Lau, Ravi Dalal, Fatih Yanik, and Mathew Abraham joining the current group in Lafayette.

Rajeev Ram's wife Caitlin gave birth to a beautiful baby girl, Asha May Jagga Ram, Wednesday, December 7, 2005 at 6:28 pm. She was 6lbs, 20 inches long. Congratulations Rajeev and Caitlin!

Mathew and Danielle Abraham announce the arrival of their first born, Fiona, on December 20, 2007.  She was 7 lbs. 7.5 ozs. and 20 inches long. Congratulations and best wishes for your precious bundle of joy!

Songho Cho has joined Samsung Electronics Corporation in Korea.

Fatih Yanik is an Assistant Professor of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at MIT.

Gustavo Gil is a Photolithography Process Engineer at Intel Corporation in Phoenix, Arizona.

Erwin Lau is still with Ming Wu but is currently at UC Berkeley.

Steve Patterson is Principal Scientist at nLight, Vancouver, Washington.

Jianyao Chen is with Lightconnect.

Ravi Dalal was married in May 2006. Ravi defended his thesis this summer receiving his PhD in Physics from Stanford. He is currently working as a scientist at Pacific Biosciences in Menlo Park, CA.

Elizabeth Bruce and her husband Tim Prestero announce the birth of their son, Alessandro Leander Prestero, born January 20, 2006 (on his actual due date), at 6 pounds 10 oz. Congratulations Elizabeth and Tim on the birth of your first child!

Margaret Wang and Frank were married on September 2005.
