Joe received his B.S. from Northwestern University (2000), and his M.S. and Ph.D. degrees from the University of California, Santa Barbara (2003, 2007), all in Electrical Engineering. While at UCSB, Joe worked on Indium Phosphide photonic integrated circuits, including tunable all-optical wavelength converters and compact waveguide mirrors. He also worked in Santa Barbara's secondary schools as an NSF GK-12 teaching fellow and was a fellow with UCSB's NSF Center for Nanotechnology in Society. After receiving his Ph.D., Joe moved to Mt. Holyoke College where he worked with undergraduates on high-resolution thermal imaging of optoelectronics (2007-2009). His current research includes design and fabrication of optical isolators for integration with InP and Si photonics.
