TOPS High School Physics Workshop

July 25– August 5, 2016

The TOPS Physics Workshop is a two-week program for high school students interested in science who are currently freshmen, sophomores or juniors. Participants explore the physics of heat, energy, waves and light through hands-on activities and lessons taught by undergraduate physics students. They also learn about research in the CUA and see how elementary principles of physics are manifested in frontier research. The program takes place at the Center for Ultracold Atoms at MIT in Cambridge. The TOPS Physics Workshop is a program within the Teaching Opportunities in Physical Science (TOPS) program for undergraduate physics and engineering majors.

The Who, Where and When of the TOPS ’16 Physics Workshop:

Who : Current High School Freshmen, Sophomores, and Juniors who are interested in science. Students should have taken a high school course in physical science, physics, or chemistry.  This program is not appropriate for students who have already taken AP Physics.

Where : The TOPS High School Workshop is located at the Center for Ultracold Atoms (CUA) at MIT, room 26-204.

WHEN : July 25 through August  5, 2016.
Monday through Friday, 8:30am – 4pm daily.
Fridays are half days, adjourning at 1:30pm.

The Center for Ultracold Atoms is funded by the Division of Physics of the National Science Foundation. It has ten principal investigators at MIT and Harvard with research programs devoted to developing new techniques for creating ultracold atoms and for applying these atoms to goals such as, atom optics, atomic quantum fluids, and novel spectroscopy.
COST Because the full cost of the TOPS High School Physics Workshop is provided by the Center for Ultracold Atoms though its grant from the National Science Foundation, there is no charge to the participants.

Housing :  TOPS is a day program. MIT is unable to provide housing for out of town students.
