Mr. Wei Ouyang Named Recipient of the 2018 Helen Carr Peake and William T. Peake Research Prize

Electrical Engineering and Computer Science student, Wei Ouyang, supervised by Professor Jongyoon Han, was awarded the 2018 Peake Research Prize. Mr. Ouyang is recognized for his work on an entirely new way to detect biomolecules (DNA and proteins) and cells in a complex sample such as blood, which is crucial in many disease diagnostics. He is engineering a highly efficient molecular /cellular concentration system, which can collect low-abundance biomolecules and cells from a larger volume (>1ml) and put them into a much smaller volume (~1pL), therefore increasing the effective concentration of those molecules significantly (10^6 to 10^9- fold increase). This allows them to be accurately analyzed.   He is applying this technique for the application of detecting blood-borne pathogens (for sepsis), Tuberculosis diagnosis, and many other biomedical sensing applications.
