Rendering of Glistening Anatomical Organs for Surgical Simulations

We believe that visual realism is very important for surgical simulations. Rendering of glistening anatomical organs is very difficult to simulate using standard texture mapping techniques. We have used environment mapping techques such as cube mapping and sphere mapping for glistening effects. The significance of this work is that deformation with glistening effect can be displayed in real time together with force feedback. Such an effect has a significant impact on the realism that can be achieved in interacting with virtual environments for surgical simulation.
