Point Based Rendering for Surgical Simulations

Use of points as geometric primitives is quite a deviation from the traditional use of triangular primitives that have explicit connectivity information. To reconstruct connectivity information on the fly for graphical rendering, we use splatting technique, a point-based rendering technique. A reconstruction kernel associated with each point, called the footprint, determines contribution of that point in the image buffer. The significance of this work is that point based models in surgical simulations could be rendered real-time yet with life-like visual effects.
