Ultrafast Optics and X-Rays
Professor Franz Kärtner

Our group develops novel ultrafast light sources and devices that operate over a braod range of wavelengths, from terahertz (THz) to x-rays. We contribute enabling technologies for large-scale x-ray free- electron lasers (XFELs), and use our novel sources and devices to study ultrafast dynamical processes in matter.

Our principal areas of research include:

  • Femtosecond- to attosecond-precision timing distribution systems
  • High-energy (joule) pulsed and high-average-power (kW) diffraction-limited laser amplifiers
  • Optical synthesizers
  • Integrated photonics
  • Ultrafast nanophotonic devices
  • Ultrafast light-matter interaction physics
  • High-harmonic generation
  • Lightwave electronics
