Kevin Chen joined RLE in the spring of 2020 as an Assistant Professor of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science. His research focuses on investigating millimeter-scaled biomechanics, distilling the underlying physical principles, and applying these findings to enable novel functions in microrobots. His research takes an integrated approach of combining at scale, high-throughput experiments and high-fidelity numerical simulations. He is particularly interested in studying fluid-structure interactions at the millimeter scale and applying the underlying principles to enable novel functions such as swimming or walking on the water surface. He is also interested in developing novel soft actuators to enable agile and robust locomotion in microrobots.

He received a BS in applied engineering physics from Cornell University and a PhD in Engineering Sciences from Harvard University. He is a recipient of the best student paper award at the International Conference on Intelligent Robots and Systems (IROS) 2015, a Harvard Teaching Excellence Award, and he was named to the “Forbes 30 Under 30” list in the category of Science.
